Everything you need to know about Reading Mountain and Basecamp.
Reading Mountain is our flagship, Orton-Gillingham based structured literacy program. It is designed to be a complete literacy journey, guiding learners from foundational sounds all the way toward advanced, high-school-level reading proficiency. Currently, Level 1 and Level 2 are available, with remaining levels rolling out in stages throughout the year.
Reading Mountain Basecamp is a completely free companion app focused strictly on phonemic awareness. It helps students learn to hear, break, blend, and swap sounds before letters are even introduced. It does not require a login.
Basecamp is completely free.
Reading Mountain costs $29.99 per month per student. However, you can try the first two lessons completely free with no credit card required. If you choose to subscribe, you can use the promo code LAUNCH50 for 50% off your subscription.
We automatically apply a 20% sibling or multiple student discount when you add more than one student to your account. Increase the student quantity during the same checkout process to ensure the discount is applied.
Reading Mountain is a comprehensive structured literacy program designed for all learners. It supports early learners building foundational skills, struggling readers who need reinforcement, and individuals with dyslexia who benefit from explicit, systematic instruction.
While many users are children learning to read, the program's structure and presentation are intentionally designed to work across ages, including older children, teens, and adults.
Younger learners or those who are struggling typically benefit most when using the app alongside a parent or instructor, as guided support is widely recognized as a best practice in effective literacy instruction.
We recommend 2 hours of practice per week to promote consistent reading growth.
This time is most effective when divided into shorter sessions across several days, for example, four 30-minute sessions.
Because learners develop at different rates, some may benefit from slowing the pace and allowing additional time for skill mastery.
Yes. After completing a lesson in the app, you can log into our instructor and parent portal at portal.readingmountain.com.
From the portal, you can view detailed progress reports and print customized worksheets for additional offline practice on that specific lesson. We recommend using these worksheets if your student needs more support before moving on.
The main Reading Mountain app is currently tablet-only and is designed to work on iPads and Android tablets with screens that are 10 inches or larger.
Coming soon: We are actively working on adding web and computer support so the main program can be accessed from a web browser. We are also working on adding support for 10-inch Fire tablets.
The Basecamp app is available for use on smartphones and tablets, including both Apple and Android devices.
Reading Mountain uses advanced speech recognition technology to listen as students read. In some cases, factors such as regional accents, natural pronunciation differences, background noise, or very short words may affect detection.
Detection generally improves as students progress to longer words and full sentences.
For best performance, we recommend using the app in a quiet environment or with an external microphone when possible. When reading single words or working with tiles, having the student repeat the word can help the system register the response more reliably.
Because speech recognition technology is not flawless, undetected words are automatically flagged in the Instructor Portal. This allows parents or instructors to review specific words and generate targeted practice to ensure accurate reading.
We continuously refine our speech recognition to improve accuracy, and enhancing reading detection remains an ongoing priority as the platform evolves.
